Schorsch Village occupies land once considered part of the notorious Cook County Poor Farm complex, established in 1851 to house Chicago's indigent, elderly, and mentally ill in what became known simply as "Dunning." The stigma lingered for decades, so when the Albert J. Schorsch Company acquired 120 acres nearby in 1916, the developers marketed their new subdivision as "West Portage Park" rather than associate it with Dunning's asylum and poorhouse.

The Schorsch name eventually won out, and by 1930 the company had built roughly 450 homes in Colonial, Georgian, Cape Cod, and English Tudor styles across the neighborhood, each design carried consistently throughout the development. The first buyers, primarily of German and Scandinavian descent, moved in during the depths of the Great Depression, drawn by the builders' reputation for quality. The Schorsch Village Improvement Association, still active today, has represented residents within the streets bounded by Addison, Narragansett, Belmont, and Harlem Avenues ever since.

From a rebranded corner of the old Poor Farm to a tidy village of Tudor cottages, Schorsch Village's quiet streets carry a history worth wearing, whatever its neighbors once called the area.
