Neighborhood History

Scottsdale sits entirely on the former grounds of Ashburn Flying Field, Chicago's first airport, which opened in 1916 as home to the E.M. Laird Airplane Company before the marshy landing strip closed in 1939. The land sat largely undeveloped until 1952, when real estate developer Raymond Lutgert subdivided the old airfield and built roughly 1,000 homes, naming the new community Scottsdale after his son, Scott.

The Scottsdale Homeowners Association organized that same year, and its members went on to secure sidewalks, acquire the Rainey and Durkin park fieldhouses, and establish a summer swim program at Daley College. The Scottsdale Shopping Center opened in November 1955, anchoring the neighborhood's commercial life during the postwar population boom that also reshaped the surrounding Ashburn community.

From Chicago's first airfield to a postwar subdivision named for a developer's son, Scottsdale's runway-flat streets carry an unexpected aviation legacy — a history worth wearing wherever your own flight path leads.
