Seminary is an East Oakland neighborhood whose name derives from the College of the Holy Names — the Catholic women's seminary and college established by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary on Seminary Avenue in 1868, one of the earliest institutions of higher education in the East Bay. The neighborhood developed circa 1869 around the seminary's grounds as a residential community serving the faculty, students, and the families drawn to this part of East Oakland by the institution's presence and the tree-lined character of Seminary Avenue. Seminary Avenue itself — the long commercial and transit corridor running through the heart of East Oakland — takes its name from the same institution and has served as one of East Oakland's primary commercial spines for over a century. The Laurel District's commercial corridor on MacArthur Boulevard lies immediately to the north, connecting Seminary residents to one of East Oakland's most active independent retail streets. Dimond Park, at the base of the Seminary slopes along Fruitvale Avenue, provides the neighborhood's primary recreational anchor.
