Neighborhood History
Sequoyah Heights takes its name from Sequoyah Road — itself a tribute to Sequoyah, the Cherokee scholar who single-handedly created the Cherokee syllabary between 1809 and 1821, giving the Cherokee people a written language for the first time. The neighborhood was established as a hillside subdivision in 1959, its residential streets developed from former ranchland on the scenic ridgelines above the Dimond and Maxwell Park districts. Sequoyah Country Club — founded in 1913 and one of the East Bay's oldest private golf and tennis clubs — occupies the lower slopes below the residential neighborhood, its grounds a defining feature of the Sequoyah Hills landscape. Knowland Park and the Oakland Zoo on Golf Links Road provide the neighborhood's primary public recreational anchor — the Oakland Zoo being one of the Bay Area's most visited family destinations, managed by the Conservation Society of California. The East Bay Regional Parks District trail network connects Sequoyah Heights to the broader upper Oakland hills system via the Redwood Road and Golf Links Road corridors. That combination of Indigenous naming heritage, historic club presence, and natural park access defines the MY-NHD Sequoyah Heights collection — gear made for those who know the upper Oakland hills by name.

Sequoyah Heights is named for Sequoyah Road, itself a nod to the inventor of the Cherokee syllabary, and was established as a hillside subdivision in 1959. Its origins reflect the mid-century move to develop scenic ridgelines and former ranchlands into residential enclaves. Notable features include Sequoyah Country Club—an anchor since the 1920s—and the panoramic ridgeline trails connecting to Knowland Park. The neighborhood traditionally attracted families seeking tranquility and expansive views; today, Sequoyah Heights is a welcoming, diverse community committed to maintaining its wooded character and strong neighborly ties.
