Sheffield Neighbors takes its name from Joseph Sheffield, a New Haven, Connecticut businessman who established a livestock and produce depot on the site in the late 1840s, shipping goods out via the newly arriving Chicago, Rock Island railroad. The area was platted as Sheffield's Addition to Chicago upon annexation in 1853, though sustained residential development did not begin until 1868. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 drove the neighborhood's real building boom, as displaced residents rebuilt outside the burned district, filling Sheffield's streets with the workers' cottages and greystones that still define it today.

That Victorian-era fabric earned Sheffield a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and the city has since designated several of its blocks as official Chicago Landmarks, including the Armitage-Halsted commercial district and the row houses of the Bissell Street District. Along Armitage and Halsted, pressed-metal cornices, corner turrets, and terra-cotta ornament still trace the streetcar and elevated rail lines that once carried commuters to downtown jobs.
