Sheffield Village is a planned residential community on Oakland's southern boundary with San Leandro, developed in 1939 by a subdivision developer who favored British place names — Sheffield, England being the steel-manufacturing city in South Yorkshire whose industrial character echoed the working-class purpose of this East Oakland neighborhood. Built as a self-contained residential enclave with curving streets and uniform homes designed for working and middle-class families, Sheffield Village retains the distinctive character of its planned origins, including the iconic stone entrance gates on 98th Avenue that mark the neighborhood's boundary as a recognized community landmark. Sheffield Village Park provides the neighborhood's primary green space.
