Sheridan Park takes its name from its position along the Sheridan Road corridor, itself named for Civil War cavalry general Philip Sheridan, whose statue stands a few miles north at Belmont and Sheridan. The district was platted starting in 1891 and, at the time, was categorized alongside Chicago's North Shore communities as a spacious, quiet suburb rather than part of the dense city core. Development continued in phases through 1929, with single-family homes built first and six-flat apartment buildings filling in later as Uptown's population grew.

That layered building history earned Sheridan Park a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, and in 2007 the city designated the Dover Street blocks a Chicago Landmark District in their own right. Architects including James Gamble Rogers, later known for his work at Northwestern and Yale, left their mark on Dover Street's rowhouses and courtyard buildings.
