Sherwood Forest is named in deliberate reference to the English folklore of Robin Hood — a whimsical choice by developer August Lang, who began laying out lots on the southwest slope of Mount Davidson in the 1930s. The neighborhood's streets reflect the theme directly: Robinhood Drive is the primary residential street and the highest residential street in the city of San Francisco, while Lansdale Avenue and Dalewood Way complete the compact two-by-three block community of approximately 200 homes. The earliest newsprint reference to the neighborhood, in the 1930 San Francisco Examiner, described the area as thickly wooded with pine and cypress — a character reinforced by its position within the tree canopy planted on Mount Davidson by Adolph Sutro in the late 19th century. Architects Timothy and Milton Pflueger were among the first to build in Sherwood Forest, designing homes for physicians who established its early identity as a professional enclave, earning it the nickname Pill Hill. Notable residents have included Mayor George Moscone and Mayor John Shelley.

Mount Davidson Park, adjacent to the neighborhood, contains a 103-foot concrete cross erected in 1934 — the tallest structure on San Francisco's highest natural point at 938 feet — which draws thousands of visitors annually for Easter sunrise services established in 1923.

Sherwood Forest's identity as San Francisco's smallest and most storybook neighborhood is exactly the kind of place-specific character MY-NHD was built to celebrate.
