Silver Terrace takes its name from Silver Avenue and the terraced character of its hillside streets overlooking San Francisco Bay. The name dates to the late 1850s — Silver Avenue itself appears in land records from the earliest subdivision efforts in the area, predating the neighborhood's residential development. The earliest documented photographic record of the land dates to 1869, when photographer Eadweard Muybridge documented lots being marketed by Duncan & Company in what was then called South San Francisco. Residential development proceeded gradually from around 1900, producing the mix of Victorian, Edwardian, and 1920s block-style homes that still characterize the neighborhood today. Silver Terrace sits in the southeastern corner of San Francisco, isolated by Highway 101 and Highway 280, which gives it an unusually sunny and sheltered microclimate distinct from the fog-prone western neighborhoods. Its multigenerational character and working-class roots have defined it continuously from its earliest residential period through the present.

The Bayview Opera House at 4705 Third Street — now known as the Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre — is one of the oldest surviving theater buildings in San Francisco, dating to 1888, and serves as a vital cultural anchor for the surrounding southeastern neighborhoods. Silver Terrace Playground and Athletic Field provides the community's primary recreational grounds.
