Neighborhood History

Skyline-Hillcrest Estates is an upper Oakland hills neighborhood developed from 1947 as ranchland and open grassland along the Skyline Boulevard ridge was subdivided into the planned residential enclave it remains today — its hyphenated name combining the boulevard that defines its elevation with the Hillcrest designation that marketed the community's position at the crest of the Oakland hills. The neighborhood's winding private streets and contemporary homes were designed for the families seeking panoramic Bay Area views and a degree of residential privacy that the upper ridge provided, making it one of Oakland's quieter and more self-contained hillside communities. The Skyline Gate trailhead of Redwood Regional Park — one of the most used entry points into the East Bay Regional Parks District's 1,830-acre redwood forest preserve — sits directly on Skyline Boulevard at the neighborhood's edge, giving Skyline-Hillcrest Estates residents immediate trail access to one of the most significant natural preserves in urban California. Hillcrest Open Space — also managed by the East Bay Regional Parks District — provides additional natural open space bordering the neighborhood to the east. Skyline Boulevard connects Skyline-Hillcrest Estates to the Montclair District below and to the broader ridge trail network above. That combination of ridge-top privacy, immediate redwood park access, and natural open space on all sides defines the MY-NHD Skyline-Hillcrest Estates collection.
