Smith Park, known locally as "The Patch," takes its name from Joseph Higgins Smith, alderman of the surrounding 32nd Ward from 1914 to 1933, for whom the city named its namesake park after acquiring the site from the Bureau of Sanitation in 1929. The land had previously served as a quarry and, later, a city dump before being transferred to the Bureau of Parks and Recreation. The surrounding neighborhood was settled primarily by Italian immigrants who moved west from the Little Sicily area along Sedgwick Street, with many families remaining for six generations or more.

Smith Park's fieldhouse and grounds remain the neighborhood's anchor, and by the late 1950s the park had also become home to a WWII-era tank and artillery piece placed on permanent display. The park sits along Grand Avenue, the historic commercial corridor that has shaped the neighborhood since its earliest days.
