Neighborhood History
South Austin traces its origins to 1865, when Oak Park developer Henry Austin purchased land west of Chicago and founded a temperance settlement he called Austinville. The area was annexed to Chicago in 1899, and rapid residential construction through the 1880s and 1890s filled its streets with Victorian-era homes even as the Panic of 1873 briefly slowed early development. South Austin became the first section of the broader Austin community to transition from a majority-white to a majority-African American neighborhood.
The neighborhood holds six sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Austin Historic District and the Seth Warner House, one of Chicago's few surviving structures built before the Great Chicago Fire. Columbus Park, designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen and now a National Historic Landmark, anchors the neighborhood's southern edge with its lagoons, stonework, and native plantings.
For anyone who has walked past the Seth Warner House or through Columbus Park's winding paths, MY-NHD's South Austin tee is a way to carry that West Side history with you.
