South Beach occupies the waterfront strip south of the Ferry Building along San Francisco Bay, taking its name from its position along the bay's southern shoreline. During the mid-19th century the area formed part of a burgeoning industrial and residential district, with Rincon Hill to its north serving as an early enclave for wealthy residents. By the late 19th century, heavy industry, docks, and warehouses dominated the waterfront as wealthy families relocated to Nob Hill following the construction of cable car lines. The area spent the 20th century as a blue-collar maritime and warehouse district. Redevelopment began in earnest in 1981 when the city initiated a plan to transform the waterfront into a mixed-use district. The decisive catalyst came in 1997 when the San Francisco Giants broke ground on their privately financed ballpark at King and Third Streets — the first Major League Baseball stadium built without public funds since Dodger Stadium in 1962 — which opened in 2000 and is now known as Oracle Park.

Oracle Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, anchors the neighborhood's contemporary identity and defines its activation calendar. South Beach Harbor, with more than 700 berths, and Rincon Park — featuring the Cupid's Span sculpture donated by Gap founders Donald and Doris Fisher — anchor the neighborhood's waterfront public space.
