South Deering takes its name from Charles Deering, an executive of the Deering Harvester Company that later became part of International Harvester, which owned the neighborhood's dominant employer, Wisconsin Steel. Before 1903 the area was known as Irondale, founded in 1875 when the Joseph H. Brown Iron and Steel Company established its works along Torrence Avenue. Immigrants from England, Wales, and Ireland arrived first for the mill jobs, followed by waves of Eastern and Southern Europeans as the neighborhood grew through the early 20th century.

Veterans' Memorial Park, dedicated by the Chicago City Council in 1954 in honor of local servicemen and women, remains one of the neighborhood's enduring civic anchors, funded in part by a memorial committee that canvassed South Deering door to door. The Trumbull Park Homes, built in 1937-38, still stand as one of the neighborhood's most historically significant residential sites.
