South Kennedy is an East Oakland flatland neighborhood whose name references the Kennedy Tract — one of the residential subdivision plats laid out circa 1912 as Oakland's grid expanded southward along the International Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard corridors. The neighborhood developed as a working-class suburb served by the electric streetcar lines that connected East Oakland's expanding residential tracts to downtown employment, its modest homes built for the industrial and service workers who made up the backbone of early 20th-century Oakland. International Boulevard runs along the neighborhood's primary commercial and transit edge — the long East Oakland artery that has sustained successive generations of working-class communities with shops, services, and transit access across more than a century of change. Fremont High School on MacArthur Boulevard — one of Oakland Unified School District's oldest high schools, founded in 1912 — serves South Kennedy and the surrounding East Oakland flatland communities as the area's most significant institutional anchor.
