Neighborhood History

South Lawndale was annexed to Chicago in 1869 and settled first by German and Czech immigrants in the years after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, many drawn by the McCormick Reaper Works, which rebuilt on the neighborhood's eastern edge after the fire destroyed its original lakefront plant. By 1903 the massive Western Electric Hawthorne Works had opened just to the west, cementing South Lawndale's identity as a working-class manufacturing community for decades to come.

The community became known locally as Little Village beginning around 1964, and today a terracotta arch designed by Mexican architect Adrian Lozano welcomes visitors to 26th Street, one of Chicago's busiest shopping corridors outside downtown. Piotrowski Park remains the neighborhood's largest and most enduring green space.
