South of Market — commonly abbreviated SoMa — takes its modern name from its geographic position south of Market Street, San Francisco's principal diagonal boulevard. Its official designation dates to 1847 when surveyor Jasper O'Farrell, commissioned by Alcalde Washington Bartlett, extended the city's survey grid southward in a subdivision recorded as the 100 Vara District, named for the measurement unit of the individual lots. Before it was called South of Market, the area was widely known as South of the Slot — a reference to the cable car conduit that ran along Market Street's center. The neighborhood was first settled during the Gold Rush as a tent city known as Happy Valley before developing into a mixed industrial and residential district. By the early 20th century, heavy industry, proximity to the docks, and working-class immigrant communities defined its character. The 1906 earthquake destroyed most of the area, which was rebuilt with wider streets and an industrial focus that persisted through the mid-20th century.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which opened in 1995 on Third Street, anchored the neighborhood's transformation into an arts and culture district. Yerba Buena Gardens, the Moscone Convention Center, and the headquarters of major technology companies including Salesforce now define SoMa's contemporary identity alongside its surviving warehouse architecture and leather and LGBTQ+ cultural heritage.
