South Park is named for the oval park at its center — San Francisco's oldest public park — conceived in 1852 by George Gordon, a British-American entrepreneur, and built beginning in 1854. Gordon engaged English architect George H. Goddard to design the development on the model of John Nash's Park Crescent in London, creating 17 mansions and a total of 58 residences arranged around a 550-foot oval of private landscaped grounds. The development featured the first paved streets and sidewalks in San Francisco. A Dutch-style windmill at the park's center pumped water for the surrounding residences. South Park was the city's first planned residential community and its most prestigious address through the 1860s, when the construction of the Second Street cut made the area accessible to working-class residents and prompted the wealthy to relocate to Nob Hill. The city acquired the park in 1897. From the late 19th to early 20th century, South Park was one of San Francisco's largest Japanese American community centers, with hotels, baths, and shops operated by Japanese families clustered around the waterfront and railroad terminus.

The oval park, unchanged in footprint since its 1854 construction, remains South Park's defining feature and the neighborhood's central gathering place. In the late 1990s, South Park became the informal center of San Francisco's dot-com revolution, with early-stage internet companies — including the first office of Twitter — clustered on the surrounding streets.
