Neighborhood History
St. Ben's takes its name from St. Benedict Parish, founded in 1902 when German Catholic families in what was then farmland on Chicago's North Side sought a school closer to home rather than the long trek to St. Matthias Parish. The first mass was celebrated in a small wooden church at Irving Park Road and Leavitt Street on February 2, 1902, and the parish grew quickly, from 90 families in 1902 to roughly 350 families by 1908.
By 1916 the growing congregation required a larger building, and a new church was constructed between 1917 and 1918 at a cost of $170,000, funded through the resolve of parishioners during the economic strain of World War I. That church and its bell tower, along with the adjoining St. Benedict Preparatory School, remain the neighborhood's defining anchor today.
For anyone who has walked past that bell tower on their way through the neighborhood, MY-NHD's St. Ben's tee is a way to carry that parish history with you.

St. Ben’s is named for St. Benedict Parish, which German Catholic families on the North Side founded in 1902, with a first church at Irving Park Road and Leavitt Street. Its larger church and bell tower, built in 1917 and 1918, still anchor it.
