Neighborhood History

St. Clair West is the name given to the neighbourhoods along St. Clair Avenue West in midtown Toronto, from Bathurst Street west toward Old Weston Road. The avenue itself lay within the former City of Toronto, while many of the residential streets to its north belonged to the former City of York until amalgamation in 1998. The avenue's name is traced to Augustine St. Clare, a character in Uncle Tom's Cabin, whose name was misspelled on joke street signs at Yonge and St. Clair. The City annexed the districts along the avenue between 1908 and 1911, and the first streetcar ran along St. Clair on August 25, 1913.

From the 1950s, Italian newcomers opened businesses and cafés along the street, and in 1972 the Streetcars for Toronto Committee reversed a TTC plan to replace the city's streetcars with buses. The St. Clair Carhouse, opened in 1913, was reborn as the Wychwood Barns after the TTC closed it, and St. Clair West station opened in 1978 with the TTC's first underground streetcar loop.

The St. Clair West tee is for the neighbours who ride the avenue's streetcar and know every café stop along the way.
