Stateway Gardens takes its name from the Chicago Housing Authority development announced on May 17, 1954, which cleared eight blocks of aging frame housing along State Street in Bronzeville to build what planners called "a suburb in the city." Constructed between 1955 and 1958, its eight sixteen-story towers held 1,644 apartments and formed the first stage of what became the State Street Corridor, alongside the later Robert Taylor Homes, Dearborn Homes, and Harold Ickes Homes.

Demolition began in 2001 under the CHA's Plan for Transformation, and the last residents left the final building in 2006. The site has since been redeveloped as Park Boulevard, a mixed-income community of townhomes and apartments that carries the neighborhood forward under a new name while its State Street address remains unchanged.
