Story & King is the historic heart of the Chicano and Mexican-American community in East San José, centered on the intersection of Story Road and King Road in the Alum Rock district. King Road takes its name from an 1851 settler to San José; Story Road carries the name of a prominent California pioneer family. Together they define the crossroads that has served as the cultural and commercial hub of East San José's Latino community for more than six decades.

In the 1930s, the young César Chávez and his family lived in the Story and King neighborhood, where Chávez first began voter registration and community organizing work — the foundation of the labor movement he would lead decades later. By the 1960s and 1970s, the intersection had become the center of San José's lowrider culture, one of the most vibrant expressions of Chicano identity in Northern California. The San José Public Library documents this era through its California Room and Africana, Asian American, Chicano and Native American Studies Center, which holds photographs, film, and historical memorabilia of the Story and King lowrider scene. Lowrider Magazine, founded in San José during this era, was born from the culture that Story and King produced. The Mural de la Raza, one of the oldest murals in San José, was painted near the intersection and documents Chicano history in the city's most concentrated expression of Mexican-American public art.
