Neighborhood History
Streeterville is named after George Streeter, a controversial figure associated with late 19th-century claims to land along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The area's development accelerated after the Chicago Fire rebuilding era, when lakefront expansion and elite residential and institutional construction reshaped the Near North Side. Much of its early land use was disputed shoreline fill, gradually formalized through municipal control and development ordinances.
The neighborhood is characterized by dense high-rise residential towers, medical institutions, and lakefront access. Key physical anchors include Navy Pier, originally built in 1916 as Municipal Pier, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, which reflects the area's institutional expansion. Its grid is tightly integrated with Lake Shore Drive and adjacent commercial corridors.
Streeterville's evolution from contested shoreline to dense urban district reflects themes of reclamation and reinvention. MY-NHD apparel drawn from Streeterville connects this layered legal and physical transformation with present-day lakefront living identity.
