Sunnydale was built in 1941 as San Francisco's third public housing development, constructed under the Federal Housing Authority's New Deal mandate to provide affordable housing for low-income families. Ground was broken on February 17, 1940, and the first fifty families moved in on March 1, 1941, paying between $17 and $29 a month in rent. The development was designed by the firm of Roller and Stringham in a garden apartment style with Streamline Moderne detailing — the same contractor, Barrett & Hilp, who built the Golden Gate Bridge, held the construction contract. Sunnydale was the most ambitious of San Francisco's early public housing projects, covering 48 acres in Visitacion Valley with 767 units arranged in low-slung buildings surrounded by picket fences and playgrounds. During World War II, the project absorbed workers from the nearby Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, and after the war it became home to African American families displaced from the Fillmore District and Western Addition by urban renewal programs.

McLaren Park, the city's second largest park at 313 acres, borders Sunnydale to the west and provides its most significant natural amenity. Sunnydale is currently undergoing a comprehensive HOPE SF redevelopment program led by Mercy Housing and Related California, replacing the original 1941 buildings with approximately 1,770 new homes while maintaining one-for-one replacement housing for existing residents.
