Temescal is one of Oakland's oldest neighborhoods, taking its name from Temescal Creek and the Nahuatl word temazcalli — meaning "sweat lodge" — applied by early Spanish settlers to the Ohlone structures they observed along the creek's banks. The neighborhood grew around the estate of Vicente Peralta, whose land was part of the 44,800-acre Rancho San Antonio granted to his father Luís María Peralta by the Spanish Crown. By the 1870s, Temescal had grown into a self-contained village of over a thousand residents, and in 1868 Anthony Chabot dammed Temescal Creek to create Oakland's first municipal water supply.

The neighborhood's commercial and civic identity was shaped by waves of immigration — first Italian families who ran cigar factories and founded the Colombo Club in the early twentieth century, then Ethiopian and Eritrean communities who established roots along Telegraph Avenue in later decades. Oakland Technical High School on Broadway, an architectural landmark and one of Oakland's most storied public schools, anchors the neighborhood's eastern edge. The Josiah Lusk Canning Company, once the largest cannery in the world, operated on the present-day DMV site at Claremont Avenue through the 1880s.
