The Alameda takes its name from the Spanish word for tree-lined street — alameda — reflecting the double rows of willow trees planted in 1799 along the mission-era road connecting El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe to Mission Santa Clara de Asís, which was constructed around 1795 by Ohlone neophytes at the direction of Father Magin Catalá. The last of those original willow trees was removed in 1982 after nearly two centuries. California's first stagecoach line, running between San José and San Francisco, operated along The Alameda beginning in 1849.

The San José and Santa Clara Railroad opened along The Alameda in 1868 as the first interurban railroad in California. It became the second electric streetcar line in California and the first interurban electric streetcar in the American West when it was electrified with an underground third rail in 1888. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy families built Victorian mansions and large estates along The Alameda, and the neighborhood developed a civic and commercial identity sustained by the streetcar corridor. The Dunne mansion, built in the 1890s, is among the oldest surviving structures in the district. The Alameda today is characterized by its historic architecture in Californian Churrigueresque, Plateresque Revival, Mission Revival, and Spanish Colonial Revival styles, and by a thriving independent business district anchored by Santa Clara University to the northwest.
