The Bayview takes its name from the sweeping views of San Francisco Bay that define its southeastern waterfront geography. Originally inhabited by the Muwekma Ohlone along the shores of Islais Creek, the district was later absorbed into the Rancho Rincón de las Salinas y Potrero Viejo under Spanish and Mexican rule. After California statehood, the area developed rapidly as an industrial waterfront, with the construction of the San Francisco Dry Dock at Hunters Point in 1866 establishing the neighborhood's identity as a working shipbuilding community.

World War II transformed the Bayview permanently. The U.S. Navy expanded the Hunters Point Shipyard into a massive wartime facility, and tens of thousands of African American workers migrated from the South during the Second Great Migration to fill shipyard jobs. Third Street — known historically as Railroad Avenue — remains the neighborhood's commercial spine, and the Third Street light-rail corridor now connects the Bayview to the rest of San Francisco. The Bayview Opera House, built in 1888, stands as one of the oldest performing arts venues in the city.
