Neighborhood History
The Bridle Path is a North York neighbourhood bounded by the road called The Bridle Path to the north, Sunnybrook to the south, Bayview Avenue to the west and Wilket Creek to the east. A new Bayview Avenue bridge, built in 1929, opened the area to residential development. In 1933 Hubert Page and his architect brother Forsey Page began the project, planning large lots, individually designed houses and riding trails; the neighbourhood takes its name from its main road.
The first homes cost between $7,500 and $10,000 in the depths of the Depression, when a typical Toronto house cost about $2,500. In 1937 E.P. Taylor bought land to the north for his Windfields estate, and in 1948 Sunnybrook Military Hospital opened to the south. Development picked up from the 1950s onward. Shortly before amalgamation, North York Mayor Mel Lastman approved $5.6 million in 1997 for new roads, storm sewers and sidewalks. North York became part of the amalgamated City of Toronto in 1998.
The Bridle Path tee is for the neighbours along Bayview and Wilket Creek, where the riding trails once ran between the lots.
