The Fillmore takes its name from Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, who gave his name to the street that became the neighborhood's defining spine. Located within the Western Addition, the Fillmore emerged as one of the few San Francisco districts to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire largely intact, which made it the city's temporary commercial and cultural center during reconstruction. That survival drew a remarkable diversity of residents — Japanese Americans, African Americans, Russian Jews, and Filipinos — creating what one historian called 'one of the most integrated neighborhoods west of the Mississippi.'

When Japanese American families were forced into internment camps in 1942, African American workers arriving from the South for wartime shipyard jobs filled the Fillmore. By the 1940s and 1950s the neighborhood had become the 'Harlem of the West,' with dozens of jazz clubs hosting Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. The Fillmore Auditorium — originally built in 1912 as the Majestic Hall — remains the district's most enduring landmark, hosting jazz and later rock legends through the Bill Graham era.
