The Gap takes its name from the urban renewal projects of the late 1950s and 1960s, when the construction of Lake Meadows and Prairie Shores to the east and the expansion of the Illinois Institute of Technology to the west left a strip of intact Victorian-era homes standing in the gap between them. That surviving three-by-four-block stretch became known simply as the GAP, and in 1988 the city designated it the Calumet-Giles-Prairie Historic District, a Chicago Landmark.

Among its most notable structures are the Roloson Row Houses on Calumet Avenue, the only rowhouse development Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed and built, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood's revival began in earnest in the mid-to-late 1970s, as African American professionals restored its greystones and Gothic and Renaissance-style homes block by block.
