The Haight encompasses Haight-Ashbury and the surrounding streets, taking its name from Haight Street, which in turn commemorates Henry Haight, a Gold Rush-era banker and San Francisco civic figure; the cross street Ashbury honors Munroe Ashbury, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1864 to 1870. Before the Haight Street Cable Railroad was completed in 1883, the area was a collection of isolated farms and sand dunes. The cable car line connected the neighborhood to Golden Gate Park and downtown, enabling the rapid development of Victorian and Edwardian row houses through the 1890s and early 1900s. The Haight survived the 1906 earthquake and fire largely intact, preserving one of the city's densest concentrations of Victorian residential architecture.

By the mid-1960s the neighborhood had become the center of San Francisco's counterculture, and in the summer of 1967 — the Summer of Love — an estimated 100,000 young people converged on the Haight and adjacent Golden Gate Park in what has been described as one of the largest migrations of young people in American history. The Doolan-Larson Building at the corner of Haight and Ashbury, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 and managed by San Francisco Heritage since 2018, serves as the neighborhood's most significant counterculture landmark. The Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury Street and Buena Vista Park anchor the neighborhood's eastern residential character.
