The Inner Sunset is the easternmost section of the Sunset District, occupying the blocks south of Golden Gate Park between Arguello Boulevard and 19th Avenue. Before developer Aurelius E. Buckingham purchased land around 5th Avenue and Lincoln Way in 1887 and began the first residential development south of the park, the area was part of the 'Great Sand Waste' — the windswept Outside Lands that San Francisco formally acquired in 1866. The name Sunset District derives from the California Midwinter International Exposition held in Golden Gate Park in 1894, which newspapers nicknamed 'Sunset City,' with an 1895 neighborhood improvement club adopting 'Sunset' in recognition of the sunsets visible from the area. The Inner Sunset developed slowly through the late 1890s and early 1900s, gaining momentum when the 1906 earthquake displaced thousands of San Franciscans who sought housing in the undeveloped western neighborhoods.

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) campus on Mount Sutro anchors the neighborhood's eastern edge. The commercial corridor centered on 9th Avenue and Irving Street developed as the Inner Sunset's main street, with the Little Shamrock bar at 9th and Lincoln Way — open since 1893 and one of the oldest bars in San Francisco — as its oldest surviving business. The N Judah Muni Metro streetcar connects the Inner Sunset to downtown through the Twin Peaks Tunnel.
