The Island earned its name from its geography: cut off from the rest of Austin by the Eisenhower Expressway and rail lines to the north, an industrial corridor to the east, and the suburbs of Cicero and Oak Park to the south and west. The area came into Chicago when the Town of Austin was annexed in 1899, and residential construction filled in through the 1920s with bungalows and two-flats built east of Austin Boulevard.

Along Taylor Street, Chicago Studio City has operated a 100,000-square-foot production facility on the neighborhood's old industrial ground, becoming the largest film studio in the Midwest and hosting productions including The Dark Knight. The Island was also home for decades to the Olson Rug Company, whose grounds once included a beloved company park still remembered by longtime Chicagoans.
