Neighborhood History

The Junction is a west-end Toronto neighbourhood centred on Dundas Street West and Keele Street, named for the railway lines that met here. In 1883 Daniel Webster Clendenan subdivided the 240-acre Keele estate as the West Toronto Junction Property, where several railways converged, the first in 1853. The Village of West Toronto Junction was incorporated in 1887, with Clendenan as reeve, and it became a town in 1889 with Clendenan as its founding mayor. After the Canadian Pacific Railway moved its shops here in 1890, the City describes it as Toronto's most important industrial suburb.

In 1904 residents voted to ban the sale of alcohol from May 1 that year, and according to The Globe and Mail the ban lasted until 2000. The Union Stock Yards opened at Keele and St. Clair in 1903, the town became the City of West Toronto in 1908, and it was annexed to the City of Toronto in May 1909. On Dundas Street, the 1888 Campbell Block and the 1911 Molsons Bank building still stand, and since 2014 an underpass has separated road and rail at the West Toronto Diamond crossing.

The Junction tee is for the neighbours of Dundas and Keele, a railway town that became one of Toronto's own.
