The Marina District sits on reclaimed bay shoreline along San Francisco's northern waterfront, between the Presidio and Fort Mason. Before 1915, the area was known as Harbor View, a small bayside bathing and pleasure resort. The site was chosen in 1912 as the location for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the World's Fair held from February 20 to December 4, 1915, celebrating both the completion of the Panama Canal and San Francisco's recovery from the 1906 earthquake. To prepare the site, 475,000 cubic yards of sand and mud were dredged from the bay and used to fill the shallow tidal flats, and earthquake rubble was incorporated into the landfill. The fairgrounds — dubbed the Jewel City — covered 636 acres with palaces, colonnades, and the 435-foot Tower of Jewels as its centerpiece. At the exposition's close, all structures were demolished except architect Bernard Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts, whose colonnaded rotunda and lagoon were preserved.

Developers rechristened the former exposition site 'the Marina' in the early 1920s as single-family houses and apartment buildings went up quickly in Period Revival, Streamline Moderne, and Art Deco styles. Chestnut Street developed as the neighborhood's commercial main street, and the Marina Green became a year-round waterfront park. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused significant liquefaction damage to the neighborhood because of its landfill foundations.
