The Mission is the oldest neighborhood in San Francisco and its birthplace, taking its name from Mission San Francisco de Asís — the sixth of California's 21 Franciscan missions, founded on June 29, 1776. The mission was informally known as Mission Dolores, a name drawn from the nearby Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores — the Creek of Our Lady of Sorrows — which colonial explorer Colonel Juan Bautista de Anza named on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows in April 1776. Before the mission's founding, the Yelamu — a Ramaytush-speaking Ohlone group — had inhabited the flat, fog-sheltered valley for over 2,000 years.

Mission Dolores, completed in its current adobe form in 1791, is the oldest intact building in San Francisco, having survived the 1906 earthquake while the adjacent brick basilica was destroyed and later rebuilt. The mission cemetery, the only remaining cemetery within San Francisco's city limits, holds the remains of approximately 5,000 Ohlone, Miwok, and Patwin people alongside early California pioneers. By the late twentieth century, the Mission had become the primary heart of San Francisco's Latino community, anchored by Clarion Alley's mural tradition and the cultural institutions of 24th Street.
