Neighborhood History

The Villa was founded in 1907 when developers Albert Haentze and Charles Wheeler purchased a triangular tract on Chicago's Northwest Side and laid out restrictive covenants requiring every home be built in the "bungalow mode." Buyers seeking single-family homes with green space and clean air filled the triangle's streets through 1925, building in the Prairie and Craftsman styles that architect Clarence Hatzfeld brought to nearly two dozen of its 126 houses.

The neighborhood earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places before the City of Chicago formally designated it the Villa Landmark District on November 23, 1983 — a five-year campaign led by a small group of neighbors who researched and photographed every home to make their case. Corner stone planters, originally pillars for stucco lights, still mark the streets today.
