Neighborhood History

Toler Heights is named for William Toler, an early East Oakland landowner whose property on the upper eastern slopes was subdivided for residential development circa 1955 during Oakland's postwar hillside housing expansion — one of the last significant waves of hillside development that made affordable single-family homes available to working- and middle-class families priced out of the flatlands. Toler Heights Elementary School — an Oakland Unified School District campus serving the neighborhood — has been the community's primary educational anchor and gathering place since the neighborhood's founding. King Estates Open Space on Golf Links Road — managed by the City of Oakland — provides the neighborhood's natural boundary to the east, offering trail access to the oak woodland and grassland landscape of the upper Oakland hills. Golf Links Road connects Toler Heights to the broader Skyline Boulevard ridge network and to the Sequoyah Country Club below. That combination of postwar hillside character, strong school community, and natural open space access defines the MY-NHD Toler Heights collection — gear made for those who know this corner of the Oakland hills and take pride in it.
