Neighborhood History
Trestle Glen takes its name from the wooden railroad trestle that once crossed the natural canyon here, carrying the Key System electric streetcar line that opened this section of the Oakland hills to residential development after 1920. The trestle — long since removed — enabled the streetcar service that made Trestle Glen's curving, tree-lined streets accessible to the middle-class families who built the neighborhood's distinctive Tudor, Colonial, and Mediterranean Revival homes through the 1920s and 1930s. The neighborhood's iconic stone entrance columns at Trestle Glen Road mark one of Oakland's most recognizable residential gateways. Glen Creek — the seasonal waterway that runs through the canyon at the neighborhood's heart — is the natural feature around which the neighborhood's character was designed, its canyon providing both the route for the original trestle and the green corridor that gives Trestle Glen its landscape quality. Trestle Glen Road connects the neighborhood to the Lakeshore Avenue corridor and Lake Merritt below. That combination of streetcar heritage, period architecture, and creek-canyon character is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Trestle Glen collection — gear made for those who know these curving streets and the history written into every stone column at their entrance.
