Tri-Taylor takes its name from its triangular shape, formed where Ogden Avenue cuts diagonally across the neighborhood's street grid near Taylor Street on Chicago's Near West Side. The area developed rapidly after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 drove middle-class residents west, and by the 1890s the neighborhood's core had become overwhelmingly Italian, part of a wave that grew the city's Italian-born population from 1,357 in 1880 to over 16,000 by 1900.

More than 400 late 19th-century rowhouses, known for decorative elements uncommon elsewhere in Chicago, still stand today. Residents fought to protect them from the expanding Illinois Medical District and the construction of the Eisenhower Expressway, winning National Register of Historic Places designation in 1983 and an expanded boundary in 1988. Turner Hall, a Romanesque Revival building that once hosted German-American athletic clubs, was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2009.
