Tuxedo is a small East Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1927 along the Foothill Boulevard corridor, its name drawn from the Tuxedo Park naming tradition — the fashionable New York resort community that inspired a wave of aspirational place-naming in American residential developments of the 1910s and 1920s. The neighborhood's compact streets and modest homes were built for the city workers and industrial families who formed the working-class backbone of East Oakland's eastward residential expansion. The Key System electric streetcar served the Tuxedo area along the Foothill Boulevard line — connecting residents to downtown Oakland from 1903 until the system's discontinuation in 1958 — and its route through this part of East Oakland laid the foundation for the neighborhood's development and commercial character. Foothill Boulevard remains the neighborhood's primary commercial and transit artery, connecting Tuxedo to the broader East Oakland commercial network. The Fairfax Avenue commercial zone to the west connects the neighborhood to the Fairfax District's independent shops and community services.
