Neighborhood History

Ukrainian Village grew up as farmland settled first by German immigrants before a wave of Ukrainian and Rusyn immigration beginning in the late 1890s made the area the commercial and spiritual hub for tens of thousands of Ukrainians across the Chicago region. By 1895 an elevated train line along Paulina Avenue had spurred dense settlement, and the neighborhood's identity was formally recognized when the city designated the Ukrainian Village District a Chicago Landmark in 2002, with extensions added in 2005 and 2007.

Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral, designed by Louis Sullivan and completed in 1903, and St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, built in the Kyivan Baroque style and consecrated in 1913, remain the neighborhood's most recognizable landmarks. The Ukrainian National Museum, founded in 1952 to preserve the folk art and history of the diaspora, still anchors the community's cultural life.

For anyone who has walked past those onion domes on their way down Oakley or Rice, MY-NHD's Ukrainian Village tee is a way to carry that heritage with you.
