Neighborhood History

Union Ridge takes its name from the glacial ridge that runs through it, one of the highest points in Cook County and long known informally as "Smith's Ridge" after Israel Smith, an early settler who built his home there in the 1830s. The area became part of Norwood Park Township when it organized in 1873, and the township's Village of Norwood Park was annexed to Chicago in 1893.

Union Ridge Cemetery, located at Higgins and Talcott Avenues, remains one of the neighborhood's oldest and most enduring landmarks, predating much of the surrounding residential development. The neighborhood itself has no schools of its own, drawing residents instead to nearby institutions across Norwood Park.
