Neighborhood History
Upper Dimond occupies the higher elevations of the Dimond District on Oakland's eastern hillside slopes, developed circa 1917 as the Key System electric streetcar enabled residential expansion up from the Dimond District's flatland commercial core along MacArthur Boulevard and the hillside streets above. The neighborhood's period Craftsman and bungalow homes were built for the families who sought the combination of the Dimond District's community amenities and the elevated hillside character that Upper Dimond's position uniquely provided. Dimond Park — one of Oakland's largest community parks along Fruitvale Avenue, with sports fields, a pool, and the adjacent Morcom Rose Garden (a 7-acre formal garden established in 1933) — anchors the neighborhood's recreational life at the base of the Upper Dimond slopes. Laurel Elementary School — an Oakland Unified School District campus in the adjacent Laurel District — serves the Upper Dimond community alongside the Laurel District's MacArthur Boulevard commercial corridor. Sausal Creek runs along the neighborhood's lower edge as part of the 14-mile urban watershed managed by the Sausal Creek Watershed group. That combination of hillside Craftsman character, Dimond District community anchoring, and creek watershed access defines the MY-NHD Upper Dimond collection.
