Neighborhood History

Upper Rockridge is the northern, more elevated section of the Rockridge neighborhood, developed from circa 1920 as Oakland's hillside growth extended the Rockridge residential district up from College Avenue into the steeper terrain above. The neighborhood is known for its variety of architectural styles — Craftsman bungalows, Mediterranean Revival, and Tudor homes — set along the peaceful, winding streets that distinguish it from the more urban lower Rockridge. College Avenue's independent retail corridor lies below, connecting Upper Rockridge residents to one of the East Bay's most walkable commercial streets, anchored by the Rockridge BART station that has provided regional transit access since 1972. The Claremont Country Club on Tunnel Road — founded in 1904 and one of the oldest private golf and tennis clubs in the East Bay — borders the neighborhood, its grounds providing a significant piece of Upper Rockridge's landscape heritage. The Rockridge Branch of the Oakland Public Library on College Avenue serves as the neighborhood's primary civic anchor. Temescal Creek runs along the neighborhood's western boundary as part of the urban creek system connecting the Oakland hills to the flatlands. That combination of hillside architectural character, transit-connected commerce, and civic library anchoring defines the MY-NHD Upper Rockridge collection.
