Neighborhood History
Valdez Triangle takes its name from Valdez Street, one of the named corridors in this small but commercially distinct district at the edge of Oakland’s downtown core. The street name reflects the broader legacy of the Mexican rancho era in the East Bay — a period when the land that would become Oakland was held under Spanish and Mexican land grants before American statehood. The neighborhood’s triangular geometry — defined by the convergence of streets near the 27th Street and Broadway corridor — gives it an unusual urban form that has shaped its identity as a transitional zone between the Auto Row district and the residential neighborhoods to the north and east. Broadway Auto Row, one of Oakland’s most historically significant commercial corridors, borders the district and has been the dominant economic presence in the surrounding area since the early automobile era. That layered history — rancho-era nomenclature, early 20th-century commercial development, and a distinctive urban geometry — is the foundation of the MY-NHD Valdez Triangle collection, made for those who know Oakland’s less-celebrated corners.

Valdez Triangle is named after Maria Valdez, a prominent local landholder, and refers to the triangular shape of the neighborhood area. Established around 1915, it grew alongside the expansion of streetcar lines and the nearby Fruitvale commercial corridor. Landmarks include Valdez Park and portions of International Boulevard, bustling with small businesses. Residents have shaped the neighborhood’s identity as a vibrant, multicultural community, embracing Latino heritage, neighborhood festivals, and efforts to improve local schools and parks.
