Vendome is a historic neighborhood in Central San José, taking its name from the Hotel Vendome, a grand Victorian resort hotel that operated at the corner of First and San Salvador Streets from 1888 until it was demolished in 1931. The hotel was named after the Place Vendôme in Paris and drew wealthy visitors and health-seekers from across California during the late nineteenth century, when San José marketed itself as a healthful resort destination. Notable guests included President Benjamin Harrison, who visited in 1891 during a western tour. The hotel's gardens and grounds occupied a full city block and became a landmark of Victorian San José.

The neighborhood that grew around the hotel's orbit reflects late nineteenth and early twentieth-century residential development, with several historic homes in the area documenting the architectural character of the era. The Vendome neighborhood is served by San José State University and is adjacent to the Naglee Park district — San José's first planned suburban neighborhood, laid out in 1902 on the former estate of General Henry Morris Naglee. The Coyote Creek Trail and William Street Park provide open space access for the community.
