Neighborhood History
Wallace Emerson is a west-end Toronto neighbourhood north of Bloor Street, between Dufferin Street and the rail corridor to the west, taking its name from the intersection of Wallace Avenue and Emerson Avenue near its centre. Much of its history centres on a site on Dufferin Street south of Dupont Street, where Canadian Aeroplanes Ltd., founded on December 15, 1916, built JN-4 Canuck training aircraft for the First World War. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum records that construction of its factory began on February 1, 1917, and the company closed in 1919.
The site later housed Columbia Graphophone, then Dodge Brothers from 1925 and Chrysler from 1928, before it was redeveloped in the 1970s as the Galleria Shopping Centre, which opened in 1972, and the Wallace Emerson Community Centre and park. The community centre and park now stand where Canadian Aeroplanes once built its aircraft, and after the indoor mall closed in 2020, the rest of the site entered a new round of redevelopment.
The Wallace Emerson tee is for the neighbours between Dufferin and the tracks, where First World War training planes once rolled out of the factory.
