Neighborhood History
Neighborhood History
Webster is a downtown-adjacent Oakland neighborhood developed circa 1880 along the Webster Street corridor — one of the original commercial arteries of 19th-century Oakland — during the railroad and streetcar expansion that transformed Oakland's downtown core in the decades following the transcontinental railroad's arrival. The neighborhood grew as a working-class residential community of Victorian and early Craftsman homes, its Webster Street commercial spine connecting residents to the retail and services that formed the backbone of downtown Oakland's economic life. Lafayette Square Park on the blocks between Webster and Harrison Streets provides the neighborhood's primary community green space, a City of Oakland park whose history traces to the early civic planning of downtown Oakland. The 19th Street BART station provides the neighborhood's primary regional transit anchor, placing Webster within the most transit-accessible corridor in the East Bay. The Fox Oakland Theatre on Telegraph Avenue — the 1928 Moorish Revival cinema now operating as a major live music venue — anchors the Uptown arts corridor immediately to the north. That combination of 19th-century commercial origins, civic park, and downtown transit access is the spirit behind the MY-NHD Webster collection.
