Neighborhood History

West Englewood was first settled by German and Swedish farmers in the 1840s, and the area's early identity was shaped by the railroad lines that converged nearby to form what was originally called Junction Grove. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 sent displaced residents west in search of open land, and by 1889 both West Englewood and neighboring Englewood had become part of the City of Chicago following the annexation of the Town of Lake.

Junction Grove Playlot Park, maintained today by the Chicago Park District, still commemorates the neighborhood's original name. The Robert Lindblom Math & Science Academy, housed in a building that has received preliminary landmark status from the City of Chicago, and the West Englewood Public Library remain anchors of the community.
